Medical Experts Learn Through Trial Not Error

26 May 2006

Premex, the UK’s largest supplier of medico-legal reporting, held an interactive seminar Pre-trial Preparation and Courtroom Skills to thirty four medical experts at the impressive Reebok Stadium, Bolton.

Pre-trial Preparation and Courtroom Skills continued the success of Premex’s nation-wide suite of seminars. The day long course was designed to provide medical professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to become a compelling and successful expert witness in a court situation.

The in-depth seminar discussed many aspects of court experiences, before introducing the eagerly awaited personal injury mock trial.

The interactive trial complete with coifs and robes helped create a court atmosphere. After swearing on oath, delegates faced a rigorous examination, cross-examination and re-examination experiencing the pressures of court.

Hosted by full time serving district judge, Mark Gosnell and leading barristers specialising in personal injury, Nicholas Braslavsky QC and Sarah Pritchard, delegates were invited to put their skills to the test by participating as expert witnesses.

One volunteer Mr Emery, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon MB BS, FRCS said, “Having never been to court before I was keen to participate in the trial. I feel today has been very useful and my confidence concerning my own reports has certainly increased. I shall feel a lot happier in this situation should I ever be called to court!”

Gordon Healiss, Expert Liaison Director, Premex, said; “As well as providing medico-legal reports, Premex are committed to, and invest heavily in, the continued education and development of the specialists we work with. Training for a potentially daunting court situation is not the norm for the medical profession, and we feel it is our responsibility to ensure we provide them with the support they need.”

In light of this success, further seminars are planned to take place in Autumn 2006. Premex presented the seminar alongside seminar partner Overriding Objective.
