Being greener - a personal opinion

04 March 2008 by Carley Rolfe

Am I the only one struggling with the actual implementation of being “green”? I have tried, my contributions to date include turning the washing machine down to 30 and taking the numerous empty bottles of vino collapso to the bottle bank.

For the purposes of writing this blog; I calculated my carbon footprint (http://www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator.aspx) .  I am not sure I would recommend this action to all as I have now promised myself that I will pledge (for a mere cost of £223.25) to plant 19 trees in Bedfordshire which will apparently will offset my carbon overspill by some  much needed 13.870 tonnes.

Since I am not sure the people of Bedfordshire will, in the long term appreciate having their homes turned into a forest, and indeed until I speak with Stuart (Sales Director at Premex) I am not totally sure I will be able to claim the expense back.  I don’t think this course of action is going to carry any strength in the long term.

I like the idea of being green and indeed never before has technology been so in place to allow us this opportunity, personally though I am never going to choose video conferencing over a face to face meeting however I can see the benefits.

Indeed the creation of my role within the company working remotely from the South has allowed Premex the opportunity of being able to do just that, continue to meet clients face to face to ascertain their needs whilst greatly reducing the sales team travel from Bolton to Bournemouth! The key message from all the websites I have reviewed seem to be that if everyone of us made a small contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions the long term state of our environment would be greatly preserved.

As such in line with our new e services and green theme I will…

  • Stop printing off my emails to read them
  • No longer walk into meetings carrying 400 reams of paper covered in various scribble and other useful information
  • Learn to review a document whilst on screen without printing off
  • No longer write blogs on paper first before typing them up!!

…I make no promises as to my future use of public transport though!  Carley Rolfe

Good article Carley. Stuart, you should definitely pay for those trees, clearly a legitimate business expense!
