Premex Services has a network of various locations, which can perform a bone scan on your client in a location which is convenient to them.

What is a bone scan?

This is a simple and safe test designed to detect bone disease or injury. A bone scan is done to look for abnormalities in the bones and can identify fractures, infections, bone disorders and tumours in the muscles and skeleton.

How is a bone scan carried out?

An injection of small amounts of radioactive materials (known as isotopes) combined with a substance preferred by the bones is given. This radionuclide travels through the blood and collects in your bones with more of it collecting in areas where there is a lot of “activity” in the bone meaning it is breaking down, or repairing itself. A gamma camera then scans your body and picks up the radiation signals which are recorded in the form of a ‘picture’. Abnormal bone will be highlighted in this picture because of its increased absorption of the isotope.

What are Bone Scans used for?

Bones scans are used to identify fractures, infections, infarctions, bone disorders, and tumours in the muscles and skeleton and identify the cause of pain or fever because these conditions all result in high bone turnover. Bone scanning is an important step in diagnosing and assessing treatment of various kinds of cancer, including breast cancer, because it can reveal if the cancer as spread beyond its primary site and developed secondary cancer growths in the bones.
